Iran rockets hit Kurdish HQ near Iraq’s Erbil

Iran rockets hit Kurdish

The headquarters of an Iranian Kurdish party in the Iraqi city of Koye, which is close to Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq, was struck by rocket fire from Iran, resulting in at least one fatality. 10 more people were hurt in the incident on Monday, according to Tariq Haidari, the mayor of Koye.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, was behind the attack, which it said used drones and missiles to target “terrorist cells.”

Drones reportedly targeted two locations for Iranian Kurdish dissidents close to Erbil and Sulaimaniyah, according to Kurdish security sources.

An Iranian Kurdish rights organization said on Twitter that the IRGC fired six drones at the Sulaimaniyah base of the Komala Party and four missiles at the Koye base of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan.

Since the passing of Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini on September 16, the IRGC has resumed operations on Iranian Kurdish militant opposition sites in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. Weeks of protests have followed Amini’s passing, which took place after she had been held by Iran’s Morality police.

Iran claims that Kurdish insurgents in northern Iraq are responsible for the country’s current instability. The IRGC declared in September that such operations would go on as long as “terrorist groups'” bases remained in place and as long as local authorities “did not act in accordance with their obligations.”
