Iranian Flights to Syria Suspended Until January 22: Latest Updates

According to the local media reported on Tuesday, it is confirmed that Iranian flights to Syria will stay suspended until late January. This decision came after recent events in Syria where President Bashar al-Assad a close ally of Tehran, was removed from power.

The head of Civil Aviation Organization of Iran, Hossein Pourfarzaneh told ISNA news agency, “To fly to a country, the destination must grant entry and admission permits. Currently, flights to Syria are suspended until January 22, after the New Year holidays.”

The exact date when flights were suspended remains unclear.

Earlier this month, al-Assad fled the country after “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” (HTS), a militant group, launched a swift offensive and took control of Damascus. The HTS leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has openly criticized Iran’s involvement in Syria over the years.

Since the HTS takeover thousands of Iranians have left Syria and the embassy of Tehran in Damascus was reportedly vandalized.

Tehran had supported al-Assad throughout Syria’s civil war, providing military advisers and resources. On Monday foreign ministry of Iran stated there was “no direct contact” with Syria’s new leadership and issued warnings against Iranians traveling to the country due to the current instability.
