Melody Theft Controversy of Awal Hayati Yama by Hassan Dunya
The Cairo Economic Court will continue today, January 13 to hear the lawsuit filed by composer Hassan Dunya against festival singers Muslim and Nour Al-Tout for using the melody of the song “Awal Hayati Yama” without his permission.
The court referred festival singers Muslim and Nour Al-Tout to experts to investigate the accusation of stealing the melody of the song which belongs to composer Hassan Dunya and set today January 13th for the hearing of the lawsuit.
Lawyer Samah Qanawi had filed a complaint against Muslim and Nour Al-Tout accusing them of stealing the melody and presenting it with lyrics that offend public taste and violate public morals without submitting it for review by the artistic censorship before its release which negatively impacts society especially since the original melody belongs to his client, composer Hassan Abu Dunya.
The Cairo Economic Court continues today to hear the lawsuit filed by composer Hassan Dunya against festival singers Muslim and Nour Al-Tout, following accusations of stealing the melody of the song “Awal Hayati Yama” and using it without permission from the rights holder.
The court had referred the case to experts to review the evidence and assess whether the original melody was indeed used without authorization. The lawsuit pointed out that the singers did not adhere to the intellectual property rights of composer Hassan Dunya, which has sparked widespread controversy in artistic circles.
He pointed out that the lyrics of the song were not submitted to the Egyptian censorship authorities before being presented to listeners which threatens the public taste and morals of Egyptian society and poses a danger to the youth who are attached to the melody created by his client, composer Hassan Abu Dunya, as stated in the complaint.
