As Hostages Return, Israel Faces Dilemma Over Releasing Palestinian Prisoners

Recently, Israel enjoyed the breakdown of the war by agreeing to a ceasefire with Hamas in which it freed 33 Israeli hostages plus hundreds of Palestinian prisoners reported to have been mediated by the US is celebrated by the restoration of a certain stability but at its cost also brought much controversy over national security and also the long term implications of such trades has been voiced out.

A poll conducted by Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies reports that 70 percent of Israelis favor this accord. Critics respond that releasing convicted persons encourages more kidnappings to take place and that past prisoner swaps have resurfaced several key incidents of militant groups.

The release of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in 2011 in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit remains the most significant point of reference since some of the released prisoners went on to become involved in attacks against Israel.

Hardliners in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have threatened strong opposition by resignation of the most important members of his nationalist religious coalition. The hostage families advocacy group “Bring Them Home” continues to urge further negotiations for the remaining captives to be released. The challenge here is for Israel is to navigate between humanitarian issues and security interests.
