UN Security Council condemns Daesh attacks in Basra and affirms its support for the security of Iraq
Iraq–In a statement issued on Wednesday, the members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the “recent cowardly terrorist attacks in Iraq” as well as the terrorist attack that took place in northern Iraq on Friday, December 3, 2021, which resulted in the death of at least 13 people.
The members of the Council expressed their sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and to the Government of Iraq, and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery. The members reaffirmed their support for maintaining the security of Iraq and for the ongoing fight against terrorism, including ISIS.
In a tweet, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) strongly condemned the ‘cowardly bombing’ in Basra and called for holding the perpetrators to account and strengthening national unity to thwart such attempts to destabilize Iraq. They renewed their support for the independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and prosperity of Iraq.
The members also stressed the need to hold the perpetrators of these heinous terrorist acts, their organizers, financiers and sponsors accountable, and bring them to justice.
The members of the Security Council urged all states to actively cooperate with the Government of Iraq and all other relevant authorities in this regard, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all means the threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law.
