Why UK, France, US want Iran to resolve nuclear material concerns
On 13 September, major World powers, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – an intergovernmental organization within the United Nations – that the Islamic Republic of Iran should clarify issues over nuclear material.
Britain, Germany, France and the United States demanded further action if Iran did not fulfill legal obligations and resolve nuclear material concerns. Why are these four countries concerned about Iran’s nuclear material? Can major World powers revive the Iran nuclear deal?
E3 and the US urge IAEA to take appropriate action
The UK, France, Germany, and the US said in a statement to the IAEA board, “Iran needs to provide, without further delay, technically credible information on the current locations of nuclear material and contaminated equipment in relation to Turquzabad and Varamin.”
Germany, France and the UK (E3) as well as the US told the IAEA that the Islamic Republic of Iran continued to carry out uranium enrichment activities in Fordow plant without fulfilling legal obligations.
IAEA on Iran
Earlier, Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, expressed concern over the unilateral changes at the Fordow nuclear plant in Iran. The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog urged the Iranian authorities to provide an explanation over man made uranium particles found at three undeclared sites in the country.
In recent months, the US has been looking for closer cooperation between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. However, no improvement has been made between IAEA and Iran.

In May, Yoav Gallant, the defense minister of Israel, said that Iran had enough enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons that can ignite the entire region.
Iran nuclear deal
Reviving the Iran nuclear deal is essential for the US and E3. However, Iran’s stubbornness has been affecting talks. Iran has repeatedly accused the US of jeopardizing the nuclear talks. However, major World powers have been accusing Iranian authorities of jeopardizing the nuclear talks aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal. Where does the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal stand right now?
The 2015 Iran nuclear deal was signed between Iran and major World powers. Under the historic nuclear deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of United Nations, United States, and European Union (EU) sanctions.
However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the nuclear deal in 2018. He also reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran. Subsequently, Iran backed off from its commitments under the nuclear deal.
