Bronny James Earns Cheers in Lakers Debut, Coach Highlights Defensive Growth
LeBron James rested Friday after competing in the Paris Olympics, but is expected to play Sunday, marking the potential first father-son game with Bronny for the Lakers.
Lakers coach JJ Redick shared an update about Bronny James, he said; “Before the game, as we were going over our rotation, we discussed Bronny”. “He’s had some great days in August and September, and this week, he’s had three really good days. We’re happy with how he’s progressing.”
Bronny scored his first points late in the game with just 56.2 seconds left, earning loud cheers from the crowd at Acrisure Arena. Though his other offensive attempts didn’t connect—a missed floater, a baseline pull-up, and a long three-pointer—Redick focused on his defensive strengths.
“Defensively, Bronny does things at his size that are unique. He’s got the potential to be a really disruptive defender,” Redick said. “On offense, he’s still figuring things out, but that’s part of the player development process.”
Redick also praised Bronny’s attitude, saying, “He’s a joy to coach. He’s got great energy and is a great person to be around. We’re rooting for him, and we’re happy to have him in the program.”
LeBron James, who is the father of Bronny didn’t play on Friday as he rested after competing for Team USA in the Paris Olympics. But Redick confirmed that LeBron is expected to play on Sunday against the Phoenix Suns. According to the ESPN, this will be the first time the father-son duo could suit up together in a game.
