European Union Calls for Investigation into Attacks on UNIFIL by Israeli Forces

The European Union has condemned attacks on the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon by the Israeli Defense Forces. Several news sources confirmed that Josep Borrell the foreign policy chief of the EU made a statement expressing deep concern over the incidents. According to the news sources, because of this incident of attacks several peacekeepers were wounded.

On behalf of the EU Josep Borrell said, “Attacks against UN peacekeepers are a grave violation of international law and are completely unacceptable, these attacks must stop immediately.” Reuters confirmed the news.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has been operating in the region since 1978. It plays an important role in maintaining peace and stability in the region of southern Lebanon. Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have recently escalated, and the situation worsened when UN peacekeepers were caught in the crossfire between the IDF and Hezbollah militants.

Josep Borrell expressed the need to ensure the safety and security of all things and people related to UN. He talked about the international law and peace. He also called for an investigation from Israeli authorities about the issue of attacks on UNIFIL.

The Associated Press said to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who disputed certain accounts from the UN accusing UNIFIL of acting as “human shields” for Hezbollah militants during the surge in hostilities.
