Turkey Detains 100 Suspected IS Members in Nationwide Raids

Turkish authorities have detained 100 suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) linked to the Daesh terrorist organisation in the past week, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Tuesday. The operations dubbed “Gurz-41” and “Gurz-42” were carried out across 24 provinces including Ankara and Istanbul, Yerlikaya announced on the social media platform X.

The suspects were allegedly involved in organisational activities providing financial aid and propagating the terrorist organisation on social media. During the raids, police seized organisational documents and digital materials.

Turkish authorities have conducted extensive operations against Daesh cells known as Gurz operations detaining at least 943 suspects in 2024 alone. Following the disintegration of the self-proclaimed “caliphate” in 2019 individuals suspected of affiliation with Daesh have reportedly formed a network in Turkey referred to as the Khorasan Province (Daesh-K).

This network is actively recruiting foreign nationals and seeking new methods as counterterrorism efforts disrupt its operations. Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has successfully thwarted the group’s recruitment, funding and logistical support activities.

Since June 2023, over 3,600 individuals with suspected ties to the terrorist organisation have been apprehended. Turkey designated IS as a terrorist organisation in 2013 and continues domestic and international counterterrorism efforts to dismantle its cells and operations.
