Morocco Enforces Tetouan Airport Closure After Heavy Rains Disrupt Aviation
The Tetouan Airport has been ordered to be closed down by Morocco after the country experienced heavy rains in the northern parts of the country. The Ministry of Transport and Logistics made a confirmation that the activity of Tetouan Sania R Mel Airport was suspended as a preventive measure to safeguard the passengers, aircraft, and airport facilities. The closure of the Tetouan Airport became effective on 29 January 2026 and is scheduled until the completion of safety checks, as well as other necessary technical operations. Officials emphasized that regular flights would not be reinstated until the airport had been completely operational in terms of safety. The ruling underscores the active strategy adopted by Morocco in the area of aviation safety despite the severe weather conditions that have already rendered roads and public transportation in the region unstable.
Impact of Tetouan Airport Closure on Flights and Cargo
All domestic and international flights (including flights to Casablanca and key cities in Europe) are impacted by Tetouan Airport shutdown. Services of airlines like the Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, and Air Arabia Maroc have been cancelled or diverted. Other than the passengers, the Tetouan Airport shutdown also affects air cargo operations since the airport is involved in small volumes of freight as belly cargo during planned flights. Operators of logistics are forced to transport consignments through other ports in Morocco which adds cost and time to transit. As the northern part of Morocco is under floods, the closure of the Tetouan Airport is one of the broader steps in terms of keeping people safe and providing aviation security until the weather improves.
