Algeria Extends Deadline for 1.2GW Power Plant Bids, Boosting Energy Capacity
The official extension of the deadline by which Algeria plans to award the flagship Algeria 1.2GW power plant deadline project has provided the contractors with more time to prepare competitive bids. The initiative is the state-owned electricity and gas utility Sonelgaz which is developing a combined-cycle gas-fired power plant to reinforce the power production capacity in the country. The move to change the deadline of the Algeria 1.2GW power plant is an indication that Algeria aims at involving a broader international involvement and technical and financial results. The government plans to use the Algeria 1.2GW power plant extension to spur greater competition and attract more experienced developers to the project, which is a strategic energy infrastructure project.
Extended Deadline Supports Algeria’s Power Strategy
Since April, Sonelgaz has been searching to find contractors who would supply the project, which is one of the main elements of the Algerian long-term energy security strategy. The new Algeria 1.2GW power station deadline gives the bidders a better chance to complete designs, financing facilities, and partnerships. Experts in the industry are of the opinion that the delay of the deadline of the Algeria 1.2GW power plant would enhance the quality and prices of the bids. The plant would contribute to grid stability once it is completed, and it would help meet increasing domestic electricity demand, and that would solidify Algeria as a significant energy producer in the region.
