The former president of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, died at the age of 67, her family said on Monday in a statement. She died just hours before US President-elect Donald Trump is set to return to his office as President.

Richards played the role of president of Planned Parenthood from 2006 to 2018, helping boost the profile of an organisation long criticised by anti-abortion campaigners. Many people have often called on the government to strip its funding.

Planned Parenthood has nearly 600 health centres across the US. It describes itself as the country’s leading provider of high-quality and affordable reproductive healthcare for all people. It is also a reputed provider of sex education.
