Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan travelled to Saudi Arabia on Friday for a one-day working visit centred on talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, bringing together three regional powers at a moment of heightened tension across the Gulf and the wider Middle East.
A Three-Way Meeting in Focus
Turkey’s presidential communications director Burhanettin Duran confirmed the visit, saying Erdogan was expected to hold talks with both the Saudi crown prince and Sharif during his time in the kingdom.
Sharif had already arrived in Saudi Arabia a day earlier for a three-day official visit, accompanied by Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and a senior delegation. Ankara has stayed notably quiet on the specific agenda, though regional media reports point to maritime security, the fallout from the US-Israel war on Iran, and defence cooperation as the likely centre pieces of the discussion.
Why the Timing Matters

The talks come against a backdrop of disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and continued upheaval tied to the US and Israel’s war on Iran, a conflict that has drawn in several Gulf states and pushed Pakistan into a mediating role.
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan formalised a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement in September 2025, and Turkish officials had separately confirmed earlier this year that Ankara had entered talks aimed at joining that alliance.
A Possible Defence Pact in Jeddah
The most significant development to watch is whether the three countries move from talks to a signed agreement. A source close to the Saudi military told AFP that the three leaders were expected to sign a joint defence pact in Jeddah, while a Turkish intelligence source indicated the pact’s foundational terms had already been agreed among the three sides. Such a coalition would formalise a security architecture that has reportedly drawn backing from 14 countries, including Turkey and Pakistan themselves.
Building on a Warming Relationship
Friday’s visit is not an isolated event. Erdogan travelled to Riyadh in February, his first visit to the kingdom in more than two years, where he and Mohammed bin Salman agreed on approaches to resolving conflicts in Yemen and Sudan and expressed support for Somalia’s territorial integrity.
That trip produced a joint statement pledging deeper cooperation on defence, energy and the economy, and Erdogan has since spoken of joint investment potential around Turkey’s KAAN fighter jet programme. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan also met Erdogan in Ankara in May, signing a new visa agreement alongside broader discussions on regional security.
What Comes Next – Erdogan Meets Saudi Leaders
If the reported defence pact is signed in Jeddah as expected, it would mark one of the clearest signals yet of a shifting regional security order, one in which Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan present a more unified front on Gulf security, Iran-related fallout and Yemen’s Houthi threat to shipping lanes.
For now, official confirmation from Ankara and Riyadh remains limited, and the coming hours are likely to clarify whether Friday’s talks produce a formal announcement or simply deepen an already fast-warming alignment between the three capitals.
