EU Demands Immediate Ceasefire in Lebanon and End to Attacks on UN Forces

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has put the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission, which has been stationed in southern Lebanon since 1978, in a difficult and dangerous position.
Since Israel’s ground operations began in late September, UNIFIL reports show injuries among its personnel and significant damage to its facilities.
When speaking at a forum in Barcelona foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged for “a ceasefire across the blue line” monitored by UNIFIL. He also said it is mandatory to respect U.N. Security Council resolutions.
According to a 2006 resolution only UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese army should be stationed in southern Lebanon.

With Gaza facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, Borrell stressed that Mediterranean leaders must go beyond simply expressing concern. He highlighted that the impact on civilians raises serious questions that cannot go unanswered.
