The announcement of Erling Haaland’s astounding new nine and a half year contract with Manchester City has reignited interest in the world’s most lucrative contracts.
Haaland’s new contract is expected to make him Manchester City’s best-paid player as well as the league’s biggest earner. The Haaland announcement comes only a month after the New York Mets signed Dominican star Juan Soto to what is thought to be the richest contract in professional sports history of a whopping 15 year, $765 million (£626 million) agreement.
The financial details of Haaland’s new contract are unknown however it is a significant increase from his previous contract of £400,000 ($487,596) each week making him Manchester City’s highest earning. The striker would have earned £20.8 million ($25.4 million) per year under the previous contract.
So even if we start with those earlier statistics and stretch them over his now new nine-and-a-half-year term, Haaland’s new deal is definitely worth more than £197.6 million ($241.3 million) over its entire duration. Anything above $240 million places Haaland’s deal in the top 50 most valuable sports contracts of all time.
