Cristiano Ronaldo, the famous footballer, has been trolled on social media after he mistakenly stated that he would be continuing his career in South Africa instead of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), home of his latest club Al Nassr.

During a press conference, he told the media, “It’s not the end of my career to come to South Africa. I’m really not worried about what people say.” The 37-year-old footballer made the controversial statement while speaking about the offers he received from other countries around the globe.

Football fans took to the social media platform to troll him with tweets. A Twitter user reportedly said, “Man doesn’t even know where he’s playing.” Another user wrote on Twitter, “They played him…he really thought he was signing for a South African team.”

The famous footballer was unveiled as an Al-Nassr player at Mrsool Park stadium in Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian capital, on Tuesday. His fans erupted in cheers at 25,000-capacity Mrsool Park.

Under the agreement between Ronaldo and the Al-Nassr club, the footballer would get about 214 million dollars from the club, making him the highest–paid athlete ever.

Ronaldo’s contract with the British club Manchester United was mutually terminated in November 2022. When the footballer lashed out at Manchester United during an interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, the Manchester United club officials terminated Ronaldo’s contract.

Reportedly, Ronaldo has not been on the field since Portugal was eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup last month.

When Ronaldo arrived in the Kingdom on Monday, he was greeted by fans at the airport. Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez received flowers from two young supporters wearing jerseys with Ronaldo’s name. The video went viral on Twitter.

Recently, Ronaldo’s FIFA 23 rating was slashed to its lowest in 12 years at 88. The footballer  recorded his worst FIFA rating of 87 in 2007.
