Iran’s Alborz and Zagros mountain ranges provide some of the most wonderful trekking opportunities in the Middle East. The Alborz and Zagros ranges run across Iran are known for their unique scenery, diversity of habitats and shows the richness of culture.

Alborz Mountains: Entry to the Caspian

The Alborz range located on the border of the Caspian Sea is the home to Mt. Damavand the tallest mountain of Iran at 5,610 meters. This is an area where treks often take you through lush forests, alpine meadows and significant sites like Alamut Castle. The treks you will find range from more moderate hikes to demanding climbs that are comfortable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers.

Zagros Mountain Range: The Center of Nomadic Culture

The Zagros mountain consists of steep valleys and rugged peaks with a wide range of flora and fauna. The Dena Protected Area, peaks reach over 4409 meters high, facilitates trekking and the opportunity for trekkers to partake in untouched natural wonders and meet nomadic tribes such as the Bakhtiari. The trails can be upwards of 80 kilometers long, accessing topography that can span villages and numerous ecological zones.

Some Tips for Trekkers

  • The best time to hike in Iran is March-June in Spring and September-November in autumn.
  • To be safe, it is advisable to hire an experienced local guide, particularly in more remote areas where there is no signposting on the trails.
  • Certain areas such as Mount Damavand, require permits to access.

Challenges for Trekkers

  • Loose volcanic scree and sulfur vents soak up the slopes which can create nausea and necessitate gear and masks should be taken. Especially on the northern slopes facing the Caspian Sea, sudden fog can drastically diminish visibility, leaving climbers navigating unknown routes even on well-known routes.
  • High elevation causes snow to stick around until May or June especially on Damavand and other 4000 meter plus peaks.
  • The Zagros is the home to leopards, wild boars and bears though the animal sightings are rare but respecting food storage protocols is important for every camper particularly in Dena National Park.
