The ongoing Yemen conflict has reached a very serious point recently after Houthi forces have escalated attacks against Saudi Arabia, while the Saudi-supported Yemeni forces retaliated against the positions of Houthis within the country. Yemen war escalation, These clashes resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians and raised concerns about the fragility of the peace process in the region.
This is despite a relatively peaceful period that lasted for almost four years since the 2022 UN-brokered truce deal. The current situation indicates how fragile this peace process is, especially given the links to the broader US-Iran tensions and competition for control over the Red Sea region.
What Happened in Yemen?
The most recent wave of fighting started in early September after the Houthi militia started a large-scale attack in Western coastal regions of Yemen, as well as on territories near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
On September 8th, the Houthis fired several missiles and drone strikes at the territories of southern Saudi Arabia, hitting energy facilities controlled by Saudi Aramco. According to Saudi officials, the attacks led to fires and temporary disruptions in the work of several facilities and resulted in injuries to 73 people, among them women and children.
As a response to the missile strikes, Saudi Arabia delivered several airstrikes on Houthi militia positions in several Yemeni territories. The Houthis accused Riyadh of delivering dozens of airstrikes, while the internationally recognized Yemeni government accused the Houthis of killing civilians in their recent attacks. These accusations remain disputed by the parties to the conflict.
Why Did the Four-Year De-Escalation Period End?
The present crisis has been developing since July, when the Houthis announced the end of the de-escalation period with Saudi Arabia due to Saudi airstrikes on Sanaa airport. After this event, Houthis started firing missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia.
Fighting, on the other hand, has spread to cover more than isolated border raids. Houthi troops have made advances into regions controlled by the government in Taiz and along the Red Sea coast, and Saudi troops have ramped up their military efforts in retaliation.
A UN official stated on September 8 that such escalation can cause political, economic, and security repercussions. It was noted that more than 5,600 families have been displaced due to the intensification of the conflict between September 3 and 8.
What is the Importance of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait?
The current conflict has become even more worrisome because of the strategic location of Yemen in relation to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Houthis have imposed a blockade on Saudi ships and have advanced closer to the area of the strait. In case of the acquisition of more territories along the Red Sea, the group will have greater influence on commercial shipping and Saudi Arabia’s oil exports. A total of 7% of the world’s oil production passes through the region, according to Reuters estimates.
The problem has become even more relevant due to the disruptions of transport through the Strait of Hormuz, which make Saudi Arabia use alternative routes via the Red Sea for exports.
What Comes Next? – Yemen war escalation
The first threat is that the war may evolve into a larger-scale regional conflict. The situation is already linked to the tensions between Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the US, making it likely that Yemen will become yet another battlefield in the Middle Eastern crisis.
As for civilians, the impact is expected to be even more significant. According to the UN, families are already being displaced from the front lines, while humanitarian efforts face significant logistical and financial problems.
