US Approves Over $5 Billion in Military Sales to Egypt Following Strategic Partnerships

The American administration has cleared deals in security services and equipment that exceed $5.3 billion to Egypt and has thus cemented its ties with a regional ally. The sale includes advanced equipment to enhance Cairo’s capabilities as a “Major Non-NATO Ally”, the State Department said in a statement. This is a pointer to the fact that Egypt has been one of the leading beneficiaries of U.S. security assistance since it struck the peace deal with Israel in 1979.

Although the beginning of Joe Biden’s administration declared a more strict position on human rights issues as compared to the previous administration of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the defense cooperation has been kept strong.

Besides the deal on Egyptian equipment, it was announced that the United States has agreed to sell $295 million worth of military gear to Taiwan and $170 million worth of bombs and missiles to Morocco as well as $130 million to Greece for drones and armored vehicles. President Biden says that this move follows with his announcing of commitment for the United States to allocate another $571.3 million in arm supplies for Taiwan.
