Mental health awareness in Arab societies

mental health awareness in arab societies (1)

There has been a great change in the attitudes towards and treatment of mental health in the Arab societies in the past several years. Discussions on psychological well being that were viewed as a taboo topic are gradually gaining acceptance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Stigmas among youths, which have been ignited over time, are difficult to endure with the increased media coverage, government initiatives and social campaigns by the youth. Mental wellness is becoming aware of a slow but steady transition, starting with schools that are implementing counseling programs to workplaces. Although the obstacles are still present such as access to professionals specializing in mental health and the pressure of the unreachable society, the Arab world is taking positive steps towards the establishment of a culture of openness and empathy.

Changing Perceptions and Social Acceptance

Attitudes towards mental health have been for a long time culturally based and religious based within Arab societies. Mental illness was traditionally viewed as something that was very easily misconstrued and also a sign of weakness or something with a spiritual nature. Nonetheless, this attitude is changing. Digital platforms are being utilized by influencers and celebrities, as well as by community leaders, to share their personal experiences which are causing others to seek the help. The process of making therapy sessions and discussions of mental health, particularly among younger generations, more normalized is a part of a more significant change. NGOs as well as universities throughout the region are also promoting awareness campaigns in order to sensitize people on stress and anxiety and depression- which used to be ignored or toned down.

Government Efforts and Institutional Support

Mental health is becoming a priority in the government agenda in the Arab world. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are some of the countries that have introduced their national mental health strategies in an effort to incorporate psychological care within their healthcare services. Anonymity and comfort have also been provided through online counseling and helplines which are more open and accessible to those who are not comfortable enough to approach some form of in-person therapy. Also, schools are introducing mental health education to ensure an early awareness of the same among the students. Although the problem of stigma in rural and conservative regions remains, these efforts are an indication that the region has turned a positive step towards inclusive mental healthcare.
