The president, in Decree No. 189 of 2026, appointed Hannan as the Syria’s new Minister of Industry and Consumer Protection. He replaces the sacked Industry Minister Mohammed Nidal al-Shaar, who was fired in the same law.

The appointment was confirmed by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), marking a clear move towards a technocratic leadership to run the country’s market recovery after the conflict.

The Background of Basel Abdul Hannan

Hannan was born in Aleppo in 1985 and has a very technical and administrative background in the cabinet. In 2009, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in energy engineering from the University of Aleppo.

Prior to his national political career, Hannan had a long career in the academic and private industries. He offered lectures at his university’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and worked in the management team in the Sheikh Najjar Industrial City, the biggest manufacturing centre in Aleppo.

His political career picked up during the turbulent transition in the country. As per the Humanitarian News Agency (Hawar News Agency, ANHA), Hannan was appointed the Minister of Economy and Resources in the Salvation Government in Idlib in 2020. Rebuilding the Syrian Industrial Sector – Basel Abdul Hannan Syria Industry Minister

The domestic economy is facing an important period of time for Hannan to fill. The country is rapidly moving from emergency managing to long-term institutional governing, thus calling for stabilization of basic commodities and local trade.

Syria’s new Minister of Industry and Consumer Protection, Hannan, has an extremely complex job ahead of him. He has to simultaneously resuscitate the floundering industries in Syria, control prices that are running out of control at the inner market and stave off uncontrolled inflation that threatens the fragile consumers.

The Middle East Institute’s region economic assessments estimate that the only viable solution to alleviate Syria’s high dependence on costly imports from abroad is to resume domestic factories to full production. After advanced training in economic feasibility studies and strategic planning, Hannan is now ready to use the instruments to bring back international investments in regional manufacturing zones.

In the end, President Ahmad al-Sharaa is investing in Hannan’s singular north-sourced industrial know-how and administration experience. Basel Abdul Hannan is set to assume office this week, and the most important test of his first few months will be whether or not he can reopen the factories and continue to provide the public with essential goods at affordable prices.
