What to Know About the Eastern Libya Entry Ban Across All Land, Sea, and Airports Today
Eastern and southern Libya’s political administration government stepped up its border enforcement on the east and south today. Eastern Libya entry ban, A decree issued late Wednesday (October 28, 2026) has introduced a new strict Eastern Libya entry ban, which bans Iranian and Afghan passports from entering the country.
All commercial and private transit points in Libya are affected by the sudden Libya eastern administration travel restrictions. The eastern government actually declared that these individuals cannot come to any land, seaports or civilian airports under its administration.
The administration did not, in public, give a security or geopolitical reason for punishing these two countries, but it did lay out a small list of exceptions. The Libya border closure applies officially to all except members of accredited diplomatic and consular missions, as well as their immediate families.
Expanding Pre-Existing Border Restrictions
The latest order comes after a series of bans on certain nationalities by the government in the east. The blanket entry ban was put in place earlier this year against citizens of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia.
Those previous limitations were put in place to deter irregular migration and mitigate areas of local security concerns, Africanews‘ regional coverage reported.
These disjointed policies at the borders reflect the strong administrative divisions in the North African nation. The Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, which is recognized internationally and which is headquartered in the city of Tripoli, has coexisted with another government, whose headquarters are located in the eastern city of Alkhansiyah.
For this reason, travellers from abroad travelling through eastern Libya ports encounter different regulatory barriers and conditions than in the western government. The local instructions add to the international precautions and warnings, such as the U.S. Department of State’s “Do Not Travel” advisory for the entire country, which is currently in effect because of “unpredictable security dynamics” and the ongoing “threat of armed clashes.
Contrasting with National Aviation Milestones – Eastern Libya entry ban
This is a strengthening of the security situation on land and sea, which came a few days after a big success in the aviation sector on a national level.
The world aviation body, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has officially removed its airspace ban on Libya after 10 years. International reintegration and economic recovery are central issues in Libya, and securing the country’s airspace is one of the key milestones towards this process, as reported by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
But with the eastern administration closing down all its land borders, international airlines and regional border agencies have now had to speed up their screening routine for passengers. Particularly for Iranians and Afghans, this temporary ban on entry to the east of Libya immediately cuts off half of the country, marking a new phase of border security measures that are more stringent.
