Iraq Plans Three International Internet Transit Deals: How the New Europe Data Corridor Would Work
The Iraqi government is rapidly working its way towards becoming a hub in the global telecom network. International internet transit deals, On Friday, Oct 30, 2026, Iraqi Communications Minister Mustafa Sanad announced that Iraq plans three international internet transit deals experiences planned, to direct regional internet traffic to the Mediterranean region.
Both these historic deals are due to be finalized on November 9 in the Qatari capital of Doha. The signing will be held on the sidelines of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, which will also include some key elections for the global leadership of the ITU.
However, under the treaties, the partnering countries will be able to easily send huge amounts of Internet traffic via Iraq’s land networks, the Iraqi Ministry of Communications said. The project connects the Persian Gulf with Europe directly through Turkey creating a very competitive Europe data corridor.
In his speech on Friday, Sanad boldly said Iraq has already become the world’s first country in terms of volume of internet traffic in the last four months. No specific comparative statistics were provided, but it highlights Baghdad’s push forward to grab the lucrative digital-transit market aggressively, with the backing of the state.
Building the Gulf-Europe Digital Route
The latest diplomatic move comes on top of huge infrastructure investments earlier this month. On 7 October, Qatar’s Ooredoo Group entered into a significant deal with Iraq’s iQ Networks for taking over large volumes of dark fibre throughout the country.
The core agreement connects the planned subsea cable drop off at southern Al-Faw peninsula with overland fiber to the border crossing of Ibrahim Khalil in the north, as reported by Fierce Network. The line is a continuous route across land and will become the backbone for the new Europe data corridor, which will avoid the traditional maritime bottlenecks.
Overland route is important geopolitical alternative, according to telecommunications experts. The estimated percentage of internet traffic passing through the Red Sea and Egypt’s land crossings is currently 90 percent, with Internet traffic flowing from Asia to Europe. An estimated 90 percent of internet traffic today flows through the Red Sea and the land crossings of Egypt from Asia to Europe.
Strategic analysis by The Cairo Review of Global Affairs has revealed the critical vulnerabilities of the single geographic chokeppoint, after shipping disruptions in recent weeks, as well as the Houthis’ shipping attack and the undersea cable cuts off Yemen. The Iraqi land bridge is also a vital route diversity and a significant increase in the digital resilience for international telecom operators.
Meeting Global Bandwidth Demand – international internet transit deals
These Internet internet transit deals with Iraq occur at the peak of the world’s unprecedented growth in data consumption.
The new Gulf-Europe digital route is tailored for the growing need for bandwidth of cloud computing service providers, hyperscale technology firms and artificial intelligence data centers in the Middle East. The overland Iraqi route is low latency and has very competitive transit rates, according to state planners.
But Middle East Monitor industry analysts warn that it is not geographic alone which will ensure commercial success in the long term. In order to retain its position as a digital bridge of the highest quality, Iraq must ensure a reliable service, have no long-term interruptions in the network and have all required domestic regulatory authorizations.
To ensure a steady transit revenue, the line of the fiber communications has to be absolutely physically secured. If the corridor secures success, it will generate a huge second round investment in local data centers, and accelerate the Iraqi digital economy.
In the end, these three looming accords are a turning point in the country’s post-war reconstruction. Baghdad is aggressively moving towards establishing itself as a lucrative, safe data pipeline connecting Europe next month with the completion of these Iraq international internet transit deals with international parties.
