Algeria Railway Development Plans Get $18.5bn Boost to Transform National Rail Network
The investment plans on the development of the Algeria railway industry are on a growth runaway stage as the nation invests Dinars 2.4 trillion ($18.5bn) to improve and develop its railroads. This giant investment, according to officials of Anesrif, is a long term vision of Algeria to enhance logistics, ease movement of passengers and promote equal development in the region. The plans of developing the Algeria railway are based on modernization of the railway tracks and expansion of the railways to the areas that are poorly served, particularly the south. As rail transport is perceived as an important economic enabling factor, the development plans of the Algerian rail transport are likely to reduce freight rates, improve trade operations, and improve industrial and agricultural operations in the state.
$18.5bn Rail Investment Drives Network Expansion
The national rail network has expanded to its current capacity of 5738 km already in recent years under the plans of developing the Algeria railways which previously had an approximate of 4 000km. One programme that was included in the Algeria railway development plans is the 495 km LaghouatGhardaiaEl Mennea line, which is under construction. The project is based on a loan of European 747.3m African Development Bank to open economic potential in southern Algeria. In general, the plans of developing the Algerian railway underline the interest of the government to rail as the cornerstone of the sustainable growth and integration of the region.
