As the UM6P Arab Universities Summit 2026 Opens, North Africa Research Commercialization Must Be the Priority

Arab Universities Summit

On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the UM6P Arab Universities Summit 2026 officially launched in Benguerir. More than 260 representatives from 145 regional and international institutions attended the event, which was organised by Times Higher Education (THE).

It’s the first time an African country has been hosting this prestigious academic event. Under the theme of “Collaboration and Progress,” the summit is strongly oriented towards progress and excellence in Arab higher education.

But the academic environment is precarious in the region. Academic visibility is crucial, but research commercialisation has now become the focus of the doing business of attending university presidents, chancellors and policymakers in North Africa.

Moving Beyond the Times Higher Education Arab University Rankings

In the past, universities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have been striving to gain higher rankings in the global university rankings. The summit’s agenda for this week includes the eagerly awaited release of the 2027 Times Higher education Arab University Rankings.

Such awards are good for institutions to have and are starting to make an impression with regional leaders. Summits covered by Morocco World News state that several chancellors explicitly pointed out that the rankings had to take the form of a diagnostic tool and not the final goal of the institution.

The real way to contribute to regional economic development will be through close collaboration between the theoretical publications of universities and practical solutions in the market. The World Bank’s economic analysis repeatedly has pointed to the need for applied innovation in the Arab world to address urgent issues, such as water scarcity, food security and the green energy transition.

In today’s world, there are still too many scientific advances being languished in university libraries. Educational development indicators reflect that the process of making a shift from peer-reviewed research to a viable commercial product is very restricted by the intricacies of the bureaucratic process and by the inadequate incorporation of Venture Capital.

Driving Innovation at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University

Hosting the 2026 summit in Benguerir is a highly symbolic choice by THE organisers. In contrast to many traditional institutions, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University was specifically created to be kept at the heart of academia and application in the industry.

The university is highly supported by OCP Group and represents the concrete implementation of targeted research in the framework of national macroeconomic strategies. Since it opened, the host university has created more than 300 patents, in perfect harmony with the needs of the private sector in the advanced laboratories located on its campus. The direct connection of the academic researchers with local startup incubators has resulted in a success in the commercialization of the research in North Africa that can be scaled up.

The regional delegates need to tap into this very approach. To achieve formal institutional future-ready resilience as highlighted in the summit’s core agenda on the official THE event platform, universities must diversify funding streams and start cross-border joint research ventures.

Moving beyond the academic silos is essential to changing the overall character of Arab Higher Education. The institutional leaders who attended the UM6P Arab Universities Summit 2026 must take actionable and binding commitments to invest in university ecosystems to nurture entrepreneurship. It is not academic acclaim but how quickly these universities can transfer the patented technologies to the local economy that will determine the success or failure of this regional gathering.
