Egypt Preparing for Its First Ever High-Speed Electric Train by August 2025

In a major step towards the transformation of its transport system, Egypt is gearing itself up to welcome its very establishment of the Velaro high-speed electric train by August 2025.

This announcement was made after an inspection of the project’s pace by Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir. The corridor is part of the first phase of a huge 2,000-kilometre-long high-speed railway network connecting all major Egyptian cities with agriculture and industrial zones.

Once operational, the rail system will consist of 60 stations, 2 main depots, and 5 maintenance centres, backed by 41 Velaro high-speed trains, 94 regional trains, and 41 freight locomotives made by Siemens Mobility.

Velaro trains are known worldwide for their speed, efficiency, and modern design. Their arrival in Egypt is a giant step in the country’s ambition to modernise its transport system. These trains will give fast and smooth travel to the passenger, thus improving cargo transport through the length and breadth of the state.

The new railway will serve as a link between the New Delta, Mostakbal Misr, Ganat Misr, West Minya, Toshka, and East Oweinat. It will also provide a major logistical trade corridor linking the Red Sea coast and the Mediterranean Sea, therefore enhancing economic growth in Egypt.
