Hans Grundberg in Yemen: Can Peace Talks Succeed After Years of War?
The UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg arrived at Sanaa on Monday. According to the UN office, this visit is focused on to the efforts to bring peace in Yemen.
This is the first trip by Grundberg to Sanaa since May 2023. In his previous visit, he met with Houthi rebels who were backed by Iran. The earlier visit was also focused on the peace roadmap. The current trip of the UN envoy is part of his ongoing push for boost peace in Yemen.
Office of Grundberg also highlighted that they are going to talk about the detained people by the Houthis. Houthis have detained several personals of UN, NGO, civil society, and diplomatic.
Crisis in Yemen:
Yemen has been facing the issue of civil war, border crisis, and regional tension since 2014. The situation worsened when Houthi rebels overthrew the Syrian government from the capital. After that they captured several population centers in northern Yemen.
Though after several years in crisis a UN lead ceasefire happened in April 2022, and the situation started to get under control. In December 2023 both sides agreed to work toward a peace process. However, tensions have recently increased due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. In retaliation, Israel, along with the United States and Britain have targeted Houthi positions in Yemen.
This visit by UN envoy is a big step by global organization to showcase efforts to bring peace to Yemen. Yemen is a nation who is suffering and trying to set back and start building itself again to provide basic needs to its people.
