Yemen’s government-aligned National Resistance Forces said they intercepted Houthi “suicide boats” on Monday as the vessels attempted to approach Yemeni islands controlling vital Red Sea shipping lanes.

According to the statement, the forces confronted the boats, though no details were given on how many vessels were involved or what happened to them.

Part of a Wider Pattern This Month
Monday’s interception is the latest in a series of naval confrontations along Yemen’s Red Sea coast in recent weeks. Yemen’s government said separately that its forces destroyed a remotely operated Houthi explosive boat on Sunday before it could reach and strike commercial vessels, according to state broadcaster Saba TV.
Days earlier, National Resistance naval patrols reported spotting five Houthi boats attempting to approach islands that overlook the international shipping route, forcing them to retreat north toward Houthi-held Hodeidah.
That same week, the forces also intercepted a vessel allegedly carrying Iranian-supplied equipment used in drone manufacturing, and shot down a Houthi reconnaissance drone that had been scouting ahead of the boat movements.
Why the Islands Matter
The islands at the centre of these repeated stand-offs sit along one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, through which a large share of global shipping passes between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Forces loyal to the internationally recognised Yemeni government, including units led by Presidential Leadership Council member Tariq Saleh, have repeatedly framed control of these islands as essential to keeping the shipping lane secure and out of Houthi reach.

Yemen has remained split since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa in 2014, triggering intervention by a Saudi-led coalition backing the internationally recognised government the following year.
The Houthis have periodically targeted vessels in the Red Sea they associate with Israel or its allies, disrupting a corridor that once carried close to a trillion dollars in trade annually, though the group had appeared to scale back its shipping attacks amid a fragile Gaza ceasefire in recent months. The renewed boat activity near the islands suggests tensions along the corridor remain far from resolved.
