India’s Steep 150% Tariff Hits American Alcohol Imports
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was recently speaking on tariff-related issues arising out of countries like India, Canada, and Japan, which had hiked tariffs on imports into their respective territories. Speaking at a presser, she reiterated the President of the United States, Donald Trump‘s stance on fair trade, vis-a-viz, his thoughts on reciprocity and free and fair arrangement.
Tariffs on US Goods
American businesses have been paying high tariffs abroad for years. The following was the clue given by Leavitt.
- -India imposes a 150% tariff on American alcohol, besides 100% on agricultural products, thus making exports including Kentucky bourbon difficult.
- -Canada has a near 300% tariff on American cheese and butter, which she called “egregious”.
- -Japan has put a 700% tariff on US rice, with more restrictions on American agricultural exports added.
She even criticized/accused Canada of “robbing” American businesses for the past years. She added that now is the time for the US to take a stand against unfair trade practices.
India’s Answer to the Tariff Issues
Trump has been up and about naming countries as the one where to sell its products, but it’s “next to impossible” owing to whopping tariffs. However, he also stated that India has now consented to cut down tariffs drastically, offering the reason as his administration’s “muscular” trade policy.
“India ground us into their massive tariffs. Massive! But now they have agreed to cut them way down because finally, somebody is exposing them for what they are doing,” he said in a televised speech nationwide.
