Protests erupted across the Islamic nation after the death of 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, in the custody of the country’s morality policy. Reportedly, Amini was arrested on September 13 for allegedly not wearing her hijab (headscarf) properly. She died at a hospital on September 16. Human rights activists and Amini’s family claimed that the country’s controversial morality police beat Amini to death.
Many Iranian women took to the streets in mid-September to protest against Amini’s death. They burned their hijabs on the street and chopped off their hair. Men and school going kids also participated in protests. They burned posters and billboards of the political leaders and demanded the downfall of the Iranian regime. Subsequently, the Iranian authorities arrested many prominent celebrities and protesters for participating in demonstrations.
