Iran is Not the ‘Bad Guy’ Here, its Israel’s Narrative

Since Hamas took Israel by surprise on that fateful day, the US government has been trying to put the blame on Iran. But Iran doesn’t want the Israel-Hamas war to evolve into a broader war that will have repercussions on the Middle East.

Seeing the western governments’ stance with Israel and rhetoric against Hamas as self-defense, Iran like other countries in the Middle East, has been pleading with the UN to call for a ceasefire. But thousands of people continue to be killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The stage had already been set by Israel-fueled misinformation of Israeli women being rapped and Israeli children being killed.

Ami Saeid Iravani, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, said the Islamic Republic of Iran aligns with the international community in endorsing the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and cessation of the Zionist regime of Israel’s uninterrupted military aggression.

He highlighted that the brutal crimes against Gaza and the killing of the Palestinian people is a clear violation of the international laws on the human rights. Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region are urging for a ceasefire in Gaze.

US Supports Israel, No Ceasefire in Gaza

But the United States rejected calls for a ceasefire, arguing that doing so would give Hamas the ability to rest, refit, and get ready. It would give Hamas the opportunity to prepare for further attacks.

Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department, said that’s an intolerable situation for Israel. “It would be an intolerable situation for any country that has suffered such a brutal terrorist attack and continues to see the terrorist threat right on its border.

Moreover, US President Joe Biden made it clear that any discussions about a Gaza ceasefire could only take place if Hamas frees all hostages seized from Israel in the October 7 attack. “We should have those hostages released and then we can talk.”

But Hamas says it will release the hostages if the IDF ceased its operation in Gaza. And it also wants Palestinians detained by Israel released.

Iran Wants to Help

The UN is seeking Iran’s help in quelling this conflict. Tor Wennesland, UN envoy to the Middle East, urged Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to help prevent a spillover of conflict in Gaza and Israel to the wider region in the Middle East.

The Iranian minister replied that Tehran wants to help with the release of civilians who are being held hostages by Hamas in Gaza. Abdollahian said Iran doesn’t want the Israel-Hamas war to spill over into the region.

But he added that Iran has its red lines – if the Israeli military operation continues, and especially if Israel follows through on its promise of a ground invasion in Gaza, Iran will respond.
