Iraqi Army Marks 104th Anniversary with New Uniform and Public Celebrations

On January 6, Iraq celebrated the anniversary of its army, which is 104 years old; the creation of a new chapter in the Iraqi army’s history. In Karbala, people threw roses and juices to the soldiers in a colorful march to celebrate the occasion. Its celebration was special this year as the Iraqi army changed its uniform after using one for 18 years.

The foundation of the Iraqi army was on the 6th of January, 1921 when “Imam Musa al-Kadhim Regiment” was formed. In this decade, it was transformed from a regional army, taking part in important events such as the 1948 Palestine war and the October 1973 war. During the Iraq /Iran war in 1980, it was rated among the top 6 most powerful armies in the globe.

However, the army was disbanded in 2003 during the US-led invasion but was later rebuilt with a volunteer base. Present-day Iraq’s army is largely domestic in aim and concern, and its difficulties include comparatively weak air defense. Iraqis celebrate this through a public holiday through reveled pride and showing support towards their armed forces.
