Kings and GM Monte McNair Go Separate Ways After Season Ends

The Sacramento Kings and general manager Monte McNair agreed to mutually dissolve their working relationship after the team’s 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in a play-in game officially terminating their 2024-25 season. The move followed five years under McNair’s management, a period marked by both the long awaited return to the playoffs and internal drama.

McNair, who was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2023 brought an end to the Kings 16-year playoff drought. Though, The momentum didn’t last long. Sacramento failed to make the playoffs this season, their 18th in 19 years despite going 40-42. Major front-office changes and roster transactions such as signing DeMar DeRozan and trading star guard De’Aaron Fox to the Spurs for Zach LaVine did not yield desired results.

The staff also released head coach Mike Brown just 31 games into the season, after a poor start. Interim coach was taken over by assistant Doug Christie but consistency remained undoubt. Key staff departures followed including assistant coach Luke Loucks and McNair’s second-in-command Wes Wilcox.

McNair expressed his appreciation on social media, referring to the Kings job as the opportunity of a lifetime and thanking players, coaches and fans for support during his tenure.

In return, Kings owner Vivek Ranadive recognized McNair’s role in establishing a strong foundation and wished him well. Sources say that former New York Knicks GM Scott Perry will take over for McNair. Perry, who had a brief stint with the Kings in 2017 has more than two decades of NBA executive experience.

The Kings enter a pivotal offseason with uncertainty on Domantas Sabonis future, coaching moves and roster consistency. Sacramento’s new era starts with a new front-office chief in charge.
