Lebanon has now established its first fully fledged government since 2022. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam who is a career diplomat and former president of the International Court of Justice has put together a 24 member Cabinet. He balanced Christian and Muslim sects under the country’s power sharing system.
It takes over at a time when Lebanon grapples with post-war reconstruction after the Israel-Hezbollah war and a collapsed economy at the same time, all of which have plunged the country into widespread poverty. Even though Hezbollah did not endorse Salam officially, it negotiated over Shiite Muslim cabinet seats, meaning that it is still very influential. However, this administration represents a step away from Hezbollah-aligned leadership, as Lebanon seeks to improve ties with Gulf nations.
