Over 100 Protestors Charged Over Anti-Hijab Protests In Iran: Report
The Judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran has charged more than 100 people in Tehran and Hormozgan provinces over the wave of anti-hijab and anti-government protests triggered by the death in custody last month of Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news, Tehran province accounted for 60 of the prosecutions and 65 people were charged over the “recent riots” in the southern province of Hormozgan.
Hormozgan chief justice Mojtaba Ghahremani said, “The rioters played a significant role in the organisation of illegal gatherings, arson and attacks on public and private property, and sowed terror among the population. So, the prosecutor has carried out swift investigations in these cases.”
Tehran prosecutor Ali Salehi said, “From now on, those who attack people’s lives or property, police, soldiers or urban infrastructure, will be dealt with decisively.”

Last month, Iranian media reported that 88 protesters were arrested in Hormozgan province. Reportedly, almost 1,200 people, including 60 women, were also arrested in northern provinces in September.
Since 16 September, Iranian police have made hundreds of arrests and prosecutors vowed swift justice for “rioters.”
Protests erupted in the Islamic nation last month when 22-year-old Amini died three days after falling into a coma following her arrest in Tehran, the capital of Iran, by the morality police for an alleged breach of the country’s strict dress code for women.
Iranian morality police took her to the detention centre because she was wearing a loose Hijab. However, she fell into a coma at the detention centre. Subsequently, the police sent her to the hospital. On September 16, the doctors pronounced her dead. On September 17, her funeral ceremony took place in Saqqez. Amini’s family blamed the Iranian morality police for her death. However, the Iranian morality police said that she was suffering from illness.
