Stay Hydrated: 5 Water-Rich Foods to Eat During Ramadan

Drinking water is essential for good health and even more important during Ramadan when the hours of fasting are extended. Water regulates the temperature of the body and supports the digestive process. An insufficient intake of fluids may result in dehydration and possible symptoms such as headache, dizziness, fatigue and inability to concentrate. Dehydration may also lead to the slowing of metabolism and digestive problems which can bring added discomfort during fasting. As a remedy, we recommend eating water rich foods at suhoor and iftar to support hydration levels. Here are five foods that have the most hydration impact in Ramadan.

Watermelon:

Watermelon contains 92% water content, making it one of the most hydrating fruits. In addition to restoring fluids that have been lost, watermelon has natural sugars that provide the body with energy while also providing antioxidants like lycopene that promote heart health.

Cucumber:

Cucumbers are made up of 95% water content which makes them delicious and rehydrating. Cucumbers also contain a lot of fiber which helps the digestive system digest easily and allows you to avoid bloating after fasting.

Oranges:

Oranges contain 86% water and are a powerhouse of vitamin C, increasing immunity and alleviating dehydration fatigue. They’re also full of electrolytes such as potassium that avoid muscle cramps.

Yogurt:

Yogurt, made up of roughly 85% water, is not only a way of drinking but also an option to hydrate your gut with probiotics. It is also a protein-rich food that will keep you fuller for longer while you are fasting.

Strawberries:

Strawberries hold more than 90% water and they are packed with antioxidants, fiber and vitamins which will keep you hydrated, assist with digestion and provide you with a refreshing wave of energy.
