On Sunday de facto leader of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa shared his bold vision for the future of Syria during an exclusive interview with Al Arabiya News. His statements about the reconstruction and governance in new Syria quickly gained attention online.

Al-Sharaa highlighted that organizing elections in Syria could take up to four years, while drafting a new constitution might require three years.

Al-Sharaa explained that fair elections requires time. He said that the improvement in public services in Syria will be visible within a year. His assurance in front of media brings a big hope to Syrians who are waiting for a new life to start in the nation.

Leader also talked about the current appointments in Syria. Al-Sharaa said these apponitments are important to maintain stability in Syria, as Syria is in its transitional period. He denied on the idea of factional power-sharing.

Supporting Peaceful Protests

The Syrian leader expressed his support for citizens’ right to peaceful protests, provided public institutions remain unharmed. He also credited the Syrian people for achieving the nation’s independence, emphasizing efforts to avoid casualties and displacement during the liberation process.

“During the liberation process, we ensured that there were no casualties or displacement,” Al-Sharaa stated.

Negotiations and the Path Forward

Al-Sharaa reaffirmed his commitment to a unified Syria. He said, “There will be no division of Syria in any way.” 

He said that discussions are underway with the Syrian Democratic Forces  to address the crisis in northeastern Syria. The ultimate goal is to integrate the SDF into Syria’s national armed forces to secure Syria.

The dissolution of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham the primary opposition group involved in the recent transition will be formally announced during the upcoming National Dialogue Conference.

Al-Sharaa concluded the interview by expressing confidence that government will work for the long-term stability in Syria. He said that liberated nation would serve as a pillar of security for the region and the Gulf for decades to come.
