Think about the practicalities of interplanetary travel now. According to current theory, we’ll need to develop light sails that can travel at speeds of up to 10% of light in order to reach other solar systems.

That gives us roughly 40 years, or one adult human lifetime, to reach Alpha Centauri. And it only goes one way.

The majority of astronauts would choose to return to Earth after exploring another solar system, but it wouldn’t be possible without time dilation or other unusual physics.
