According to Arab News, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani accused IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi of having “unprofessional, unfair and unconstructive views” on Iran’s nuclear deal. Kanaani said that Iran hopes a return to the 2015 nuclear deal can be reached if the United States shows goodwill.

Iran nuclear deal

In 2015, Iran signed a nuclear deal with world powers. Under the pact, Tehran confirmed to limit its nuclear activity to civilian purposes, and in return, world powers agreed to drop their economic sanctions against Iran. This deal lifted most of the sanctions imposed on Iran. However, former US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the deal in 2018, reimposing tough economic sanctions on Iran. Subsequently, Iran’s ruling clerics responded by breaching the deal’s nuclear restrictions.

In April 2021, the negotiations to revive the Iran nuclear deal started between Britain, China, France, Germany, Iran and Russia, with the US taking part indirectly. In April 2022, Iranian lawmakers set their conditions for the revival of the deal.
