Turkey elections: Putin and Zelenskyy congratulates Erdogan on winning the election

Vladimir Putin, the current president of Russia, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the current president of Ukraine, have congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after he extended his two-decade rule.

On Sunday, the official result showed that Erdogan received 52.1 per cent of the votes, while Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the main opponent, received 47.9 per cent of the votes.

After winning the election, Erdogan received messages of congratulations from world leaders. The Russian president said, “The election victory was a natural result of your selfless work as the head of the Republic of Turkey.” Putin further said that the victory was a clear sign of the support of the Turkish people for Erdogan. Putin called for further expansion of Russian-Turkish relations.

The Ukrainian president congratulated the Turkish President on Twitter. He wrote on Twitter, “We count on the further strengthening of the strategic partnership for the good of our countries, as well as the strengthening of cooperation for the security and stability of Europe.”

Other leaders also congratulated Erdogan on Twitter. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, congratulated Erdogan on winning the election. Biden said that he was looking forward to working with Erdogan again “on bilateral issues and shared global challenges.”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Erdogan to congratulate him. He highlighted the importance of the strong relationship between the United Kingdom and Turkey.

French President Emmanuel Macron, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Union Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as well as Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan congratulated Erdogan on winning the election.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu called Sunday’s run-off election as “the most unfair election in years.” However, he did not dispute with other leaders.
