Assassination of Two Iranian Supreme Court Judges Shocks Nation
Two senior Iranian judges were shot dead in an apparent assassination inside the country’s supreme court. On Saturday morning, a shooter stormed the court in Tehran killing Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh.
The attacker committed suicide while fleeing the scene according to the judiciary’s news website, Mizan. A bodyguard was also injured during the incident. The motivation for the attack is unknown but both judges are alleged to have participated in the Islamic government’s crackdown on opponents since the 1980s.
The judiciary’s media office labelled the attack as a deliberate assassination. It further stated that based on preliminary findings, the attacker was not involved in any cases heard by the Supreme Court. Officials are investigating whether anyone else was involved in the incident.
Both victims have been in the courts for decades. The supreme court’s responsibilities would have included confirming death sentences. Razini, 71, was one of Iran’s most senior judges who escaped an assassination attempt in 1998. Moghiseh, 68, has been sanctioned by the EU, the United States and Canada for suspected human rights violations.
