Morocco Thwarts Islamic State Terror Plot, Arrests 12 Suspects
The Moroccan Police deactivated a 12-strong terrorist organization tied to the Islamic State in the Sahel that attempted to strike Morocco at that time. Moroccan police tracked down a 12-member terror cell made up of men aged 18 to 40 and arrested members in Casablanca, Fez, and Tangier plus other regions.
Sahraoui supervised operations outside the Sahel and sent orders directly to the cell calling itself the Maghreb Caliphate Lions of the Caliphate. During their last week’s raids, police found weapons stashes near the Algerian border with weapons hidden in Malian newspapers from January. Police found IS flags along with large amounts of money during their investigation.
Cherkaoui Habboub as head of Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations confirms that Morocco stays top priority in the plots of all terrorist groups based in the Sahel. After French troops left Sahel countries in 2022 IS used that instability across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to grow their organization. During 2023 terrorist supporters from IS conducted their deadliest strike in Morocco by murdering a police officer in Casablanca.
