Could Donald Trump address questions on US imports of Russian uranium and fertilizers?
Since the beginning of the brutal conflict in Ukraine, the US has imported billions of Russian commodities, including uranium and fertilizers.
This could seem like double standards as on Tuesday, Trump sharply criticized India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, announcing his decision to substantially increase tariffs on Indian imports in the next 24 hours.
The announcement definitely sparked a detailed response from India as Delhi defended its energy purchases as essential due to global market realities.
US imports of uranium and fertilizers from Russia
During a press conference just hours back, US President Donald Trump had to address questions about his country’s imports of uranium and fertilizers from Russia. His response: “I have to check it out.”
It appears Trump does not have much information about US imports from Russia. It has been reported that since January 2022, the US has imported $24.51 billion of Russian goods. This includes $1.27 billion of fertilizers in 2024 alone.
The US has also imported $624 million of uranium and plutonium from Russia last year, and $878 million of palladium. Some of the major 2024-25 US imports from Russia include, fertilizers, precious stones and pearls, metals, inorganic chemicals, machinery and aircraft.
