Libya Aviation Safety Warnings Lifted as the Historic Brega Oil Refinery Restarts

Libya aviation safety warnings lifted

Libya’s transportation sector and its energy sector both are indicating a speedy recovery after two announcements this week. Libya aviation safety warnings lifted, On Monday, October 26, 2026, the government announced Libya aviation safety warnings lifted safety restrictions, thus paving the way for more flights from abroad.

Meanwhile, State oil executives were celebrating a big downstream success with the successful Brega oil refinery restart. The similar initiatives underscore a nation-wide effort to modernize its critical infrastructure, stabilize the domestic economy and draw foreign capital.

Restoring Libyan Airspace Safety and Global Confidence

On Oct. 23, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) formally announced the historic aviation decision. Libya’s Transport Minister Mohammed Al-Shahoubi said the UN agency ended its airspace restrictions that it had previously imposed since the 2014-2015 civil war.

The decision comes after years of spirited efforts to upgrade the nation’s aviation industry. In recent times, Libyan Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) has upgraded country’s radar network, upgraded ATM and strengthened security measures at main airports in accordance with the strict Libyan airspace safety requirements.

This regulatory clearance is already having an impact on the economy. The Voice of Nigeria reports that transit permits for the 2026 – 2027 winter season has risen to a whopping 61,968 flights per month. This is a huge increase from the 2,000 flights recorded in a month last year.

The endorsement is the first major move towards the resumption of direct foreign airline routes to Tripoli, however, while the European regulators and the US Federal Aviation Administration continue to give their own safety advisories, the endorsement from the ICAO is the first.

National Oil Corporation Executes Brega Oil Refinery Restart – Libya aviation safety warnings lifted

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) officially reopened one of the oldest petroleum processing facilities in the country, in addition to the advances in airspace. The NOC has just closed the long-awaited restart of the Brega oil refinery over the weekend.

The Mediterranean plant has made a successful comeback to its main processing capacity, 10,000 b/d, reported Hydrocarbon Processing. This is area production that is crucial for meeting local fuel needs and naturally diminishing need for imports of refined products.

More significantly, petroleum engineers were able to successfully re-start the plant’s natural gas processing unit. The improvement will enable the supply of 60 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to be moved directly to the national pipeline system instead of being flared into the atmosphere.

Egypt Oil & Gas energy analysts believe this huge amount of flaring will have a noteworthy impact on greenhouse gas emissions and provide much needed feeds gas to onshore power generation plants. Two methanol plants, also owned by the Sirte Oil Company, have also officially started production, following the refinery’s return.

In the end, the international flight ban was lifted and the stabilization of energy assets downstream represented a clear sign of change for the country. Libya is committed to modernizing its refining facilities and take a firm position to secure its airspace, in order to pave the way towards viable economic growth and foreign integration.
