Mahmoud Abbas Meets Cyprus President in Nicosia to Urge Renewed Diplomatic Peace Talks

Mahmoud Abbas meets Cyprus President

Palestinian leadership is making a major push for European backing for moribund Middle East negotiations. In a crucial Nicosia summit on Thursday, Mahmoud Abbas meets Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to formally ask for diplomatic support in the wake of this week’s parliamentary Israeli elections.

The Palestinian leader was welcomed into the Republic of Cyprus on Wednesday evening for an official two-day visit, at the invitation of the Cypriot government. In the two talks, Abbas reiterated his eagerness to reopen formal peace negotiations with Israel when a new government is officially established in Israel.

The two leaders spoke about curbing tensions between their countries and boosting EU-Palestine relations, according to official Palestinian statements released by the Palestinian News & Information Agency (WAFA). Abbas extended the greetings to the Cypriot government in public, recalling that Cyprus chose to recognize the existence of Palestinian statehood in 1988.

Coordinating the Amalthea Sea Corridor

As well as political negotiations at the summit, it also was a major forum for immediate crisis response. The agenda included Cyprus’s growing humanitarian involvement in the region, as reported by the Cypriot daily Phileleftheros.

The leaders held a detailed discussion of the functioning of the Amalthea sea corridor, a designated shipping route that transports essential supplies straight from Cyprus to the Gaza Strip, which has been under conflict. The two governments are working intensively together to ramp up the supply of humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians who have fled their homes.

A Call for Renewed Diplomatic Peace Talks

The top-level Palestinian delegation included several high-level officials to enable these comprehensive talks. Cyprus Mail says the PLO Executive Committee Member Ziad Abu Amr and General Intelligence Service chief Majed Faraj were also with President Abbas.

Also attending the closed-door sessions were Presidential Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs Majdi al-Khaldi and Palestine’s Ambassador to Nicosia Abdullah Attari in order to brief Cypriot officials on the latest developments in the region’s security.

Cyprus is in a special geopolitical place because of its long-standing and strong diplomatic ties with Israel and Palestine, regional analysts point out. Also as reported by Greek Reporter, Abbas is making good use of these historical connections, using them to make Nicosia a central figure in any future negotiations.

Finally, at Mahmoud Abbas meets Cyprus President Christodoulides, the Palestinian Authority is making it abundantly clear that it wants international action. Palestinian leadership is advocating for a renewed diplomatic dialogue with Israel and boosting the Amalthea sea corridor to pave the way for long-term stability in the region after the next transition of the Israeli government.
