Morocco Unity Day 2026: Why October 31 Matters and What the 907 Royal Pardons Mean
The Moroccan government is celebrating a historic new addition to the Moroccan calendar this weekend. In compliance with his constitutional prerogative, King Mohammed VI has exercised the clemency he has even granted hundreds of citizens who were convicted by different courts in the Kingdom for the first time in the history of Morocco Unity Day 2026.
The Ministry of Justice has officially announced that 907 royal pardons have been granted just before the October 31 celebrations. The sweeping decree has a direct effect on people who are currently in prison, as well as those who are serving their sentences on a bail of one sort or another.
It is an old tradition in North Africa. In the past, the king of Morocco granted pardons in honor of significant religious and national events. But this particular initiative is also particularly special, because for the first time in the history of the nation, it sets the tone for the first-ever Unity Day – a day of humanitarian and patriotic sentiment.
Breaking Down the 907 Royal Pardons
On Friday evening the Ministry of Justice released a detailed and precise analysis of the beneficiaries. Of the 907 pardons issued, 613 people are still in prison in Morocco.
Of those who were incarcerated, 595 prisoners had the time of their active prison or confinement sentence reduced formally. Also, 17 inmates received a full pardon to the end of their sentences—immediate release. In particular, one prisoner’s life sentence was officially commuted to a fixed term sentence.
The number of beneficiaries who are free is 294. According to the publication of the Maghreb Arabe Press (MAP), state-run media, the list also includes 202 individuals whose financial penalties have been pardoned by the state. Additionally, 72 persons have received pardons after serving their time in jail, and 11 saw both sentences and fines annulled.
Why October 31 Matters for the Kingdom
Morocco Unity Day 2026 brings in a great change in the civic agenda of the country. The newly created holiday, which will take place on October 31, will be awarded to commemorate the respect for the territorial unity of the Kingdom and the historical unity of Moroccan people.
This date has now become permanent as a date of national unity in the region as reported by Hespress English. The state’s emphasis on social cohesion, rather than political unity, is heavily entwined with the release and rehabilitation of citizens.
In addition, financial institutions are also taking part in the historic weekend. Bank Al-Maghrib has given the green light for the minting of a special commemorative silver coin, MAD 250, to celebrate the first anniversary of the Unity Day, Le360 reports.
Ultimately, the effective implementation of these 907 royal pardons affords the promise of real social benefits during the first Morocco Unity Day 2026. The exercise of this sovereign power by King Mohammed VI on October 31 has solidified the new holiday as an important time for introspection, forgiveness and long-lasting national unity throughout the Kingdom.
