The crucial deal for border security was signed on October 28, 2026 in Egypt, hence allowing the fast national digital transformation of the country. Egypt e-passports, By introducing the new Thales Cyshield deal in Egypt, the country is getting closer to upgrading its travel infrastructure.

Egypt new electronic passports e-passports launch date has not yet been confirmed but the newly signed MoU marks the commencement of development and deployment of the new electronic passports. The agreement is a comprehensive one, comprising two main strategic projects aiming at the complete integration of physical and digital identity.

The first phase is expected to be a comprehensive upgrade of Egypt’s border management system, as per industry reports by Biometric Update. This includes the mass rollout of biometric airport gates and automated passenger clearance systems at airports, land and sea borders.

The new eGates enable travellers to cross the border in a matter of seconds thanks to multi-biometric authentication that incorporates facial and fingerprint recognition. The high-tech installation will be linking more than 32 crossings across the border into a single, integrated port management system that will significantly cut border crossing delays at major ports such as Cairo International Airport.

Rolling Out the Nationwide Electronic Passport

The second key element of the agreement is aimed at the much-delayed upgrade of the Egyptian travel document. Thales and Cyshield will jointly create secure digital solutions to help facilitate nationwide issue of highly secure e-passports.

Contactless microchip technology will be used in these advanced documents containing the holder’s biometric information that fully meets the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) global standards.
