Algeria is steadily strengthening its position among Africa’s leading poultry-producing nations. Ranked fifth on the continent, the country’s poultry sector continues to expand despite challenges related to feed imports and supply stability. The Algeria poultry industry has recorded gradual growth in meat and egg production, supported by rising domestic consumption and government intervention. While Algeria still trails behind major producers such as Egypt and South Africa, strategic investments and policy reforms are helping the Algeria poultry industry become more competitive. With egg oversupply and renewed export permissions, the Algeria poultry industry is evolving into a key contributor to regional food security.

Feed Imports, Egg Oversupply and Market Outlook

Between 2017 and 2022, the Algeria poultry industry grew at an annual rate of around 1.1%, reaching nearly 275,000 metric tonnes of poultry output. Feed availability remains a major concern, with Algeria importing a record 5 million tonnes of corn in 2024–2025 to support the Algeria poultry industry. At the same time, egg production has surged to nearly 10 billion eggs annually, creating an oversupply against domestic demand. To stabilise the Algeria poultry industry, authorities have re-authorised egg exports and increased imports of breeding stock. These measures aim to strengthen competitiveness and reduce reliance on poultry imports.
