‘Baseless Political Stunt’: President Joe Biden Slams Impeachment

US President Joe Biden, like his predecessor Donald Trump, is set to face an impeachment inquiry despite lack of evidence.  The impeachment inquiry comes as the US prepares for 2024 election. Biden is expected to come face-to-face with former US President Donald Trump, who has been impeached twice.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said they are following the law and will not prejudge the outcome because they can’t. The House Republicans voted 221-212 Wednesday to formalize an impeachment inquiry into Biden. The official probe will examine whether he improperly benefitted from son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.

The White House had earlier dismissed the inquiry as unsubstantiated by facts and politically motivated. In recent months, the Republicans have put the spotlight on the Biden family and their alleged corruption.

Republicans Tarnishing Biden

The Republicans wanted Hunter Biden to testify behind closed doors, but the first son held a dramatic news conference. “I’m here today to make sure that the House committee’s illegitimate investigations of my family did not proceed on distortions, manipulated evidence and lies. And I’m here today to acknowledge that I’ve made mistakes in my life, and wasted opportunities and privileges I was afforded. For that, I’m responsible, for that I’m accountable and for that, I’m making amends.”

Hunter Biden rejected claims that his father was involved in his business dealings.  He slammed the investigation as completely politically motivated. “In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances. But to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd.”  He called it shameless.

James Comer, the House Oversight Chairman, has accused Hunter Biden and other Biden family members of engaging in shady business practices, but has yet to show any concrete evidence of wrongdoing or influence peddling by President Biden himself.

Joe Biden Disappointed With Republicans

President Biden expressed distaste with the Republicans can the impeachment inquiry. “Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, they are focused on attacking me with lies. Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by facts.”

Biden said the Republicans in Congress won’t act to help. “There is a lot of work to be done. But after wasting weeks trying to find a new Speaker of the House and having to expel their own members, Republicans in Congress are leaving for a month without doing anything to address these pressing challenges.”
