Cubs Beat Padres in 10th Inning, End Home Winning Streak

The San Diego Padres perfect home run streak came to an end at the hands of the Chicago Cubs with a battle-hardened 2-1 extra-innings victory on Tuesday evening. The win not only provided the Cubs with a huge confidence boost but also broke the Padres’ stunning 11-game home winning streak in Petco Park to begin the season. It was a closely contested game throughout, with each side fighting through lost opportunities and pinch hits. The Cubs broke through in the 10th and managed to hang on to capture the win, giving San Diego its first home loss of the season.
Nico Hoerner was the hero of the evening. In the top of the 10th with Dansby Swanson positioned at second base as the automatic runner, Hoerner singled a triple to right center against Padres reliever Yuki Matsui. Swanson easily scored and gave the Cubs the lead. Hoerner had three hits.
In the 10th’s bottom the Padres got a golden opportunity to even the score with men on the corners but Cubs reliever Caleb Thielbar closed the door by forcing out Luis Arraez on a fly ball, earning his first save of the year. Ryan Pressly picked up the victory after recording a scoreless ninth that left the game tied going into extras.
In a close game Manny Machado put the Padres up 1-0 in the fifth inning with a 400 foot soaring homer, his second of the season after the Cubs missed two foul balls on his long at bat. He sent the ninth pitch, a fastball from Chicago starter Shota Imanaga into left center.
The Cubs tied the game in the sixth inning on a combination of solidly placed hits and intelligent bunting, with Pete Crow-Armstrong scoring the tying run. Both starting pitchers Shota Imanaga for Chicago and Randy Vasquez for San Diego each threw five solid innings to keep the contest close early.
The series finale is on Wednesday, with Cubs lefty Matthew Boyd pitching against Padres righty Nick Pivetta as both clubs try to finish on a high note.
